Almost every large metropolitan city has cuisine unique to the area. Not only does the city have dishes that you can only find in that location, but each city has unique versions of everyday dishes that you can enjoy throughout the country. People often debate which is better: Chicago-style pizza or New York-style pizza? Others might quibble over sizzling shrimp or the best burgers.

Philadelphia is no different. Within this popular city, you’ll find delicious foods that either originated here or foods that you simply can’t find anywhere else.

Cheesesteak is possibly the most popular food associated with this historic town. This iconic item is a sandwich that involves sliced beef and melted cheese slathered on an Italian roll. Cheesesteak was created in the 1930s, when two hot dog vendors put some slices of grilled beef on a hot dog bun for a nearby taxi driver. The sandwich was such a hit that vendors began selling it at their hot dog carts. Later, a cook added melted cheese to the sandwich and an icon was born.

Today, dozens of restaurants throughout Philadelphia specialize in cheesesteak sandwiches, including Pat’s Steaks, Geno’s Steaks and more. Of course, each restaurant claims to have the best sandwich in town.

The soft pretzel is another food associated with the Philadelphia area. This snack is basically a mix of wheat flour and yeast twisted into a traditional pretzel shape and then sprinkled with salt before baking. Although it wasn’t created in this “City of Brotherly Love,” soft pretzels became popular in the area when many vendors began selling them on the streets from their carts. This delicious food item actually dates back to France’s 7th century and came to Philadelphia via the Pennsylvania Dutch.
 
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is also known for its hoagies. This is another great sandwich believed to have been created in Philadelphia. It was declared the city’s official sandwich in 1992. Generally, it’s made up of a variety of meats and cheeses along with lettuce, onions and tomatoes on an Italian roll. Hoagies are particularly familiar to residents along the northern East Coast in places like New York and New Jersey, but residents typically look to Philadelphia for unique hoagie specialists.

Some of the other popular Philadelphia foods include Italian ice, scrapple, roast pork Italian and Philadelphia Pepper Pot – a soup made from meat, tripe and vegetables. But sandwiches tend to be a staple of the Philadelphia lifestyle, especially the type that use an Italian roll.
 
Some people drive in from other cities and states just to experience the unique taste that only Philadelphia restaurant owners provide. Several rivalries throughout the city occur, with different restaurants claiming that they have the best dish around.
